PROJECTS
Innovation and Tradition against Climate Chang
Technology Supporting the UNESCO Vineyard Landscape
The project “Technological Innovation Supporting Tradition to Tackle Climate Change in the UNESCO Site” was developed with the goal of combining the area’s winegrowing tradition with sustainable technological solutions and environmental monitoring tools. By installing climate and agronomic sensors in the experimental vineyards of the agricultural institutes of Alba, Asti and Rosignano Monferrato, it became possible to collect real-time data on soil moisture and vegetative growth, providing valuable indicators for the informed management of vineyards.
The project included an extensive educational programme through the learning paths “Vineyard Landscapes and Climate Change – between Technology and Tradition, Mitigation and Adaptation”, aimed at students of all ages. Activities combined classroom lessons with guided visits to the monitored vineyards, encouraging direct observation, a deeper knowledge of the territory and greater environmental awareness among younger generations.
The initiative was carried out in collaboration with schools, research institutions such as DISAFA – University of Turin, the Council for Agricultural Research and Analysis of Agricultural Economics – Viticulture and Oenology Section (CREA-VE), and the Climate Change Study Centre (CSC), as well as numerous local stakeholders. This network made it possible to build a shared archive of data and knowledge, strengthening active community participation in the protection of the landscape.
Through the use of digital tools and the processing of the collected data, the project contributed to the development of climate mitigation and adaptation practices, balancing agricultural tradition with technological innovation. The landscape has been interpreted as a dynamic, living system in which the culture of agricultural practices meets the challenges of climate change.
A communication campaign accompanied every phase of the project, engaging schools, teachers and local communities. The programme concluded with a public event to present the results and create an opportunity for dialogue with the territory, reinforcing the link between culture, education and sustainability.
The project was implemented with the support of the Ministry of Culture, under Law 77/2006 – Financial Year 2019, dedicated to the safeguarding and enhancement of Italian UNESCO sites.
