Nizza Monferrato, in the heart of Alto Monferrato, is one of the most representative areas of wine production in Piedmont.
This area, which covers approximately 2,300 hectares, is located in the hills of Monferrato and includes the municipalities of Montegrosso, Mombercelli, Agliano Terme, Castelnuovo Calcea, Vinchio and Vaglio Serra, among others.
The key protagonist here is Barbera di Monferrato, a grape variety cultivated for over 500 years, which is now considered the most important red variety in Piedmont. The area is particularly renowned for its Barbera d'Asti DOCG production, with special attention given to the 'Nizza' subzone, which indicates wines of an exceptional quality from these specific municipalities.
The area is characterised by breathtaking hilly landscapes and scenic roads, as well as a strong connection between agricultural tradition and innovation.
Nizza Monferrato is renowned as the commercial and cultural capital of Barbera and is home to an important Regional wine shop dedicated to promoting local wines.
The production chain is highly structured: there are 880 vineyards dedicated almost exclusively to Barbera, 229 specialised wineries as well as several cooperative wineries which still play a key role in promoting local wine today. The cooperatives operating in Vinchio and Vaglio Serra are particularly notable.
Visiting Monferrato in Piedmont, particularly the area around Nizza Monferrato, means immersing yourself in a place where wine, culture, landscape and flavours intertwine to reveal a vibrant identity deeply connected to the land.
