Conference “Twinning between UNESCO Sites: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato – Honghe Hani Terraces”
Where Culture and Agriculture Meet
The conference, organized by the Association for the Heritage of the Vineyard Landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, brought together Italian and Chinese institutions at the Castle of Grinzane Cavour. The initiative launched the twinning between the Piedmont UNESCO site and the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces, with the aim of sharing experiences in the management of the cultural landscape, the hills and vineyard rows, agricultural rituals and community memory.
The initiative made it possible to weave together experiences of protection and enhancement between the two UNESCO landscapes, preserving and passing on the identity, knowledge and gestures linked to the land and the vineyard, and building relationships among institutions, operators and communities to jointly develop projects on education, sustainable tourism and climate resilience.
The twinning creates an operational and symbolic bridge between the rows of the Langhe and the Chinese terraces, promoting hospitality, care and balance between tradition and innovation. It strengthens the international dimension of the site, consolidating the role of the landscape as a common good to be observed, shared and enhanced.
The initiative is part of the international projects funded under the 2022 ‘Conferences and Publications’ Call of the Directorate-General for Education of the Ministry of Culture, with the aim of strengthening dialogue and cooperation among UNESCO sites.
