As part of its efforts to enhance the historical and technical heritage of the Italian railways, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the end of three-phase electric traction in Italy, the FS Italiane Foundation is organizing a two-day event on May 23rd and 24th. The initiative, in collaboration with the Trenoclub Savona and involving local institutions, will run historic trains between Milan, Alessandria, and Acqui Terme, featuring the three-phase E431.027 locomotive from the Piedmont Railway Museum. Also in Acqui Terme, the former station goods warehouse, now known as the "Movicentro," will host institutional meetings, cultural events, and much more. Finally, an E464 locomotive with a livery celebrating three-phase traction will be deployed on tourist trains between April and July 2026. Why Acqui Terme? Acqui Terme station, a hub on the Alessandria-San Giuseppe di Cairo-Savona and Asti-Ovada-Genoa lines, entered the history of the Italian railway system because, on May 25, 1976, it was the terminus of the last train with three-phase traction, coming from Alessandria, hauled by locomotives E 432 008 and E 431 003. At 9:48 a.m., the three-phase power was permanently cut off, and after initial work on the overhead line, at midday, the E 656 026 departed Acqui with the train that marked the unification of the 3,000-volt direct current power system on the FS network. A piece of history was inexorably leaving us as we entered the modern world.
