Meeting on Yitzhak Rabin on Sunday 12th in Casale

April 12, 2026 · Casale Monferrato

THE STREETS OF YITZHAK RABIN IN THE CASALE JEWISH COMPLEX Smulevich's book retraces the journey of the Israeli statesman and his message of peace. Almost 30 years ago, his wife Leah visited the Casale Synagogue. On Sunday, April 12th, the cultural season at the Casale Monferrato Jewish Complex hosts an event packed with memories, but also reflections on the present. Adam Smulevich will be at 3:30 pm in the Carmi Hall to present his book, "And You Will Choose Life: War and Peace Along the Streets of Yitzhak Rabin" (Minerva Edizioni). For those who have long followed the activities of the small Casale Jewish Community, memories inevitably go back to February 20, 1997, when it was visited by Leah Rabin, who only two years earlier had lost her husband, assassinated by an Israeli radical right-wing extremist. The city of Casale Monferrato also awarded her honorary citizenship, and, incidentally, the theme of that day was "A Peace in Common." Before being an excellent writer, Smulevich is a meticulous journalist, having joined the editorial staff of the UCEI since 2011, and it's inevitable that his books always have an investigative flavor. He had already demonstrated this to the people of Casale Monferrato a few years ago with his book "Presidents," in which he retraced the life of Raffaele Jaffe, founder of Casale Calcio, deported and killed in Auschwitz. In "Israel. Between Abyss and Hope. A Journey into the Soul of a Country," he offers an unfiltered account of a nation traumatized by the carnage perpetrated by Hamas on October 7, 2023. A journey through interviews and personal reflections that, in a certain sense, continues in this book, "And You Will Choose Life." At the forefront is the biography of the Israeli prime minister, winner of the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize along with Yasser Arafat: two men the world now remembers together in the image of the handshake facilitated by Bill Clinton. But that life serves Smulevich as a luminous path to retrace its places in the light of contemporary history. Jerusalem, Ramallah, Gaza form the backdrop for witnesses past and present: Rabin's family, the world of his assassin, the statesman's collaborators, the singer Noa... So many lives that confronted the power of that message back then and that today must grapple with feelings that are difficult to name, both Israeli and Palestinian, which in Smulevich's account are sometimes linked by a tragic parallel. Perhaps we can start from here to answer the question that opens the book. In Rabin's pocket, when he was hit three times in the back, there were the lyrics of a song about peace. After October 7th, does it still make sense to sing it? Participation is free. The meeting will be moderated by Alberto Angelino, journalist and communications director for the Casale Jewish Community.
