In Casale Monferrato, it's a well-known fact: Carnival arrives in July. It's the magic of Galleggia non Galleggia, the now historic event organized by the Friends of the Po, which this year celebrates its tenth edition on Sunday, July 12, on the large lawn of the Imbarcadero on Viale Lungo Po Gramsci. Cardboard boats on Italy's longest river: the plot has always been the same, but the ones who write the story and interpret a script full of twists, laughter, and costumes are the hundreds of participants—beware of calling them competitors—who every year choose to spend a Sunday filled with imagination, fun, and the desire to play together, young and old, outdoors, in the charming setting of the right bank of the Po, just a stone's throw from the city center. At the Imbarcadero, the boat-building operations will occupy the morning, while the afternoon, as per established tradition, will be dedicated to sailing tests. Here, with all competitive activity banned, the public will cheer in eager anticipation of spectacular shipwrecks. "Galleggia non Galleggia" is not a race, but a true off-season Carnival parade. Everything is carried out with maximum safety for all participants, thanks to the collaboration of specialized Red Cross operators, both in the water and on land. Special attention is also paid to the environment: all materials used, including those that will make up the boats involved in the shipwrecks, will be promptly collected and disposed of according to waste separation guidelines. To participate and test your skills in building and sailing spectacular boats made from cardboard and packing tape, it is essential to register online through the Amici del Po website, www.amicidelpocasale.it, starting Monday, June 8th. It is advisable not to wait too long: registration will be limited to a limited number of places. The rules can also be consulted on the same website. In the event of adverse weather or river conditions that prevent the event from being held safely, the event will be postponed to Sunday, July 19th. The Friends of the Po di Casale, reestablished in 2013, are a volunteer association in Casale dedicated to promoting the development, maintenance, and conservation of the culture, landscape, and river traditions of Casale. They do this by offering a wide variety of opportunities to enjoy the Po to all tourists and residents of Monferrato.
