The exhibition "How Were You Dressed?", conceived by Amnesty International and Libere Sinergie, promoted by Zonta Club Alessandria with the patronage of the Province of Alessandria and the me.dea anti-violence center, will open on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the CIOFS headquarters in Casale Monferrato. The exhibition aims to raise awareness of gender-based violence. The project will run in Casale Monferrato until April 27, 2026, and, in addition to the CIOFS, will also include stops at the Balbo Institute, For.Al, and the Santa Caterina choir. The initiative offers an exhibition that juxtaposes clothing with testimonies of violence, aiming to counter one of the most widespread prejudices: the belief that victims are responsible for their clothing. The exhibition's title, in fact, recalls a question often asked of women who have suffered abuse, implicitly suggesting a correlation between clothing and violence, which the project aims to disprove. Launched in the United States in 2013 and subsequently spread to Italy, the exhibition is based on a direct and immediate approach, engaging the public through the recognition of everyday situations. The everyday and familiar clothing on display helps highlight how violence is not determined by what is worn, but by who perpetrates it, fostering a broader reflection on the stereotypes and cultural dynamics that still surround the topic. Councilor for Equal Opportunities, Annalisa Rizzo, and Councilor for Education, Training, and Employment, Fiorenzo Pivetta, stated: "The exhibition 'How Were You Dressed?' represents an important opportunity for our community to reflect on the issue of gender-based violence and the stereotypes that still surround it today. The exhibition, spread across multiple locations throughout the city, allows us to address sensitive issues in a direct and concrete manner, raising awareness, particularly among younger generations, of respect for the individual and the importance of consent. We thank the promoters and all the institutions involved for making this initiative possible, which contributes to building a culture of prevention and awareness, countering harmful prejudices and fostering a more attentive and responsible citizenry." Nadia Biancato, president of Zonta Club Alessandria, adds: "We will be offering the exhibition widely from 2024 because the first step to eliminating violence is recognizing it, the second is asking for help. Women must have faith in institutions and in the community in which they live to overcome violence, and this is why our organization has promoted the "Pact to Combat Gender-Based Violence," recently signed by the City of Casale Monferrato. Its aim is prevention, which means education, and this exhibition is one of the tools. We are grateful for the large-scale exhibition that will be held in Casale Monferrato so that students and citizens can engage with the topic of sexual violence, one of the most horrific forms of violence against women, which offends dignity, undermines self-esteem, and if not addressed respectfully, is a source of re-victimization: 'What were you wearing?' is a question that belongs to a culture that must be dismantled. I thank the students of the IIS Vinci Nervi Fermi Migliara of Alessandria for helping us faithfully reproduce some of the clothing featured on the 17 panels on display, with the same level of awareness that the Casale students will have after visiting it. The exhibition will be held in several locations throughout the city: from April 8th to 11th at the CIOFS, from April 13th to 18th at the Balbo Institute, from April 20th to 24th at For.Al, and will conclude on the weekend of April 25th in the choir of Santa Caterina, open to the public. The initiative is part of awareness-raising activities aimed at the public, with particular attention to younger generations, promoting greater awareness of the issues of consent and respect for the individual.
