The Monferrato of the Infernot
The Monferrato of the Infernot
The area concerned includes eight upland urban centers characterized by the widespread use of the “Pietra da Cantoni”, a kind of sandstone that only exists in this part of the territory, the hillside reservoir of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato.
Such structures, located under the ordinary homes and used to store wine bottles, are actually works of art born within the rural culture and thanks to the expertise of “Pietra da Cantoni” masters. They are therefore the witness of the know-how of an ancient tradition passed down to our days through these artifacts.
The site “Il Monferrato degli Infernot” also includes the ecomuseum devoted to the craft of “Pietra da Cantoni” working and its major mines, no longer in use, from which the starting material was originally extracted.
The main vine variety of the area is still the Barbera, mainly produced as Barbera of Monferrato, different from Barbera d’Asti for the vinification methods the two wines are produced with.
There are 104 production holdings altogether and, in a 18th century building at Vignale Monferrato, there is the Winehouse of Monferrato, recognized as one of the first regional wineries of Piedmont.
