The Outstanding Universal Value

A site is included on the World Heritage List only if UNESCO acknowledges its “Outstanding Universal Value, OUV”. The OUV for this site is the deep-rooted wine culture and the extraordinary landscape shaped by human labour devoted to vine cultivation and wine production.

The site is indeed a unique witness of a cultural tradition alive, an exceptional example of relationship between man and nature lasted more than two thousands of years. The rows of the vines conventionally grown in the area, the varieties of cultivation, the varied system of places of production and traditional settlements underline the existence of a “living” landscape where every evolution takes place with respect of and in balance with tradition and innovation.

The vineyard landscape of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato is therefore the exceptional result of a “wine tradition” handed down and evolved from ancient times to this day, which constitute the heart of the socio-economic life of the territory. The constant search for a better production cycle has led to the creation of pre-eminent wines of international quality (such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Asti Spumante, Barbera d’Asti). What made it possible is a rich heritage of knowledge and techniques, based on the deep knowledge of the traditional vine varieties of the area (Nebbiolo, Moscato Bianco, Barbera) and of their adaptability to environmental conditions.
